Information/ Instructional design, what is it ?

Information/ Instructional design can be defined as the development of instructional specifications to ensure the quality of instruction in an orderly fashion. It describes a wide and increasingly significant field of design involving the process of translating complex, disorganised, or unstructured data into accessible, useful, clear information. As designers the key principle is that it is not always the content of raw data or information that is designed, but more so the form of its delivery. From a creative point of view, information design is primarily the process of displaying information graphically and effectively in order to make visual sense of raw data. Information/Instructional design consists of the collaboration of semiotics (signs & symbols), graphs, maps, typography and statistical data.

This poster is another example of information design as it is showing the intense increase of CO2 emissions from 1995 to 2005. It contains clear visual imagery to represent the information of CO2 emissions in a sort of timeline.

Interactive Design (ixd), what is it ?

Interactive Design comes from the word interaction, where the development of applications is vital for the process of efficient communication and sharing of information between users. Interactive Design can be made up of sounds, videos, images and other digital media that can be used for people to react and respond to.

Examples of Interactive Design include;

Fast & Furious Movie [dot] net.

This website is a must visit; [ http://fastandfuriousmovie.net/index.html ] , it is a great example of interactive design as the navigation brings up a layout that is nearly identical to that of the navigation for the game “need4speed”. This is a perfect Interactive Design example because it is made up of sounds, videos, images and other digital media that can be used for people to react and respond to.

Starbucks Coffee at Home
Starbucks Coffee at Home is an example of an interactive website. It is very informative, draws in the user’s attention completely and ultimately remains an interactive and fun browsing experience. The website also allows the user to browse certain selections of coffee, and the Find My Perfect Coffee quiz is also very educational and interesting.

Examples of Web 2.0 ?

So maybe if some examples of web 2.0, it’s meaning and purpose can be more easy to understand;
Here are some of the examples of web 2.0 …..

Facebook

Facebook is a social networking site where users of the site can make their own profile, customise it for their own tastes and interest and invite friends to join them by becoming an online “friends” and communicate between each other via the site. This allows people to reconnect with long-lost friends or just stay in touch with family or friends from either school, university, work or clubs.

Social Network sites are designed to put emphasis on staying connected with your friends or connect with new people. These social friend based networks often allow you to join groups and connect with people who share similar interests.

YouTube is a place for people to engage in new ways with video by sharing, commenting on, and viewing videos. YouTube originally started as a personal video sharing service, and has grown into an entertainment destination with people watching more than 70 million videos on the site daily.

YouTube gives users a chance to become their own film producers or actors in their own films and broadcast it to the world. Users can also express their views on certain topics or share their interests where other users are able to comment and respond with their own videos on the topic at hand.

Twitter

Twitter is a micro blog. A site where people can post miniature blog, normal just a few words, which express how they are feeling, what they are doing or just their general ideas on topics. This process of micro blogging has boomed because of sites, such as Facebook,as the process is for people who want a blog however don’t want to blog. A personal blog tells other people of what is going on in their life however users don’t want to spend hours on looking through pictures or reading short stories, therefore the micro blog enables us to post short sentences such as “Went a bought a new car”.

First thing comes first; Web 2.0.

Ever heard of it before ? Wondered what it is ? No need to be curious anymore as this post shall cover the definition of web 2.0 for all those who are still pondering on the topic.

Web 2.0 is a term that is defined as web development and design that helps people to communicate, share information securely, share products and services, networking and businesses to interact with one another from around the world. It was developed by Tim O’Reily in October 2004 and retrieved information from Java Script, Ajax, XML programming and RSS. Since then it has offered us with more ways of interacting as it has increased in creativity and the ability to collaborate data through different web technologies. Web 2.0 has become an innovative way for web pages to be explored more dynamically as the Internet continues to expand across the globe.

To put it in short;
It is through the combination of these;
• Convergence
• Participation
• Interactive

that Web 2.0 is born.

“web2pt0ixd”, does this confuse you ?

Let me explain; web 2pt0 is web 2.0 and ixd is short for interactive design in which this is all that this particular blog will cover .

From reading through this blog you should be able to learn more about what web 2.0 is and what interactive design is and their importance or their role in today’s world. There are links to the sources of which the information gathered on this blog under the “References” page in navigation if you would like to seek additional information.

There is a page called “Planning Tools” in which some of my University class had exercises to work on in relation to interactive design that may be of interest. Enjoy your visit !
